As modern women, it’s so easy to bring the culture of independence into our relationship with God. I can speak from personal experience, I don’t even realize I’m doing it.
A stressful situation comes up and often my immediate reaction is “how do I fix this?” “What can I do?” “Am I doing enough?”
Can anyone relate?
Notice there is no God in any of those statements. I regret, that my prayers to God for help often come after I’ve tired of my own efforts. I’m convinced, however, that God does not want daughters who are constantly drained and at their wit’s end.
Let’s take in this scripture:
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.” Psalm 46:4-5
Isn’t this a shift from independence culture? It’s saying, because God is inside her, there are things that will take place. She will not fall. And God will help her.
This is talking about the place where God resides, and if God lives in you this is talking about you. As you are reading this I hope and pray that you have surrendered your own dominion over your life to welcome Jesus Christ to live and reign on the inside of you. And if you have, but you know you are still trying to hold onto the reigns and have trouble releasing control, let’s say this prayer together:
“Lord Jesus, my savior and my friend, I acknowledge that you want to dwell inside of me. Out of all of the places you could dwell, you want to be with me. What an honor and blessing to be desired by the King of Kings. I confess, I struggle to give you control. All I’ve known in this world is how to control, but your scripture and your kingdom teach a different way. Teach me the ways of surrender and obedience, so that I can take full advantage of you living on the inside of me. I love you Lord, and I am so grateful for your love and faithfulness to me. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
